If the name Sue Stemp isn’t on your radar screen, it should be. She’s been designing behind the scenes for brands you’ve undoubtedly loved in this life including Tocca, Daryl K and Alexander McQueen.  St. Roche founded in 2014, is the brainchild of Sue and her husband Paud Roche. Made in Los Angeles the brand infuses inspiration from her life in LA’s Laurel Canyon with her English heritage. One afternoon a few years ago, while perusing the racks at Intermix Madison Avenue,  I found myself inexplicably drawn to a pair of bright red elastic waisted track pants with bubble gum pink stripes down the sides. The pants were a statement- taking me very much out of my fashion comfort zone.  People noticed them. The pants spoke long before I did which I didn’t know was even possible :-) My favorite look was to pair them with an ivory cashmere sweater, white sneakers, larger than usual hoops and my signature camel coat. My new red and pink combination track pants proved to be a portal into the soul of the brand and I’ve loved them since; relevant from a fashion perspective, fun, quirky, feminine, utilitarian and wait for it...sustainable to boot!

So in the spirit of cultivating inspiration from some of fashion's most talented voices, enter Sue Stemp of St. Roche on what she’s wearing and doing at home right now.

Where she is right now: Los Angeles, CA

Stay at Home Style:

“Right now for me it’s all about layering, staying cozy, wearing something that gives me joy and still looking put together enough and fashion enough (from the waist up) for video meetings. I live in Laurel Canyon, in the Hollywood Hills, I’m an early bird and the mornings are cold, so I need a sweater to start the day off. My absolute fave piece in our collection is this Sissy Sweater with puff sleeves, it’s made from super soft Alpaca (a sustainable yarn) in Peru and is my go-to. I love wearing it over a high ruffle neck blouse or top in organic cotton with Broderie Anglaise, I’ve got quite a few options! From the waist down it's a lot less interesting at the moment…usually cropped jeans, comfy wooly knit socks and Birkenstocks.”

Fashion to look forward to:

“Post - quarantine I can’t wait to break out my summer dresses, put on a heel again and go out! I’m also looking forward to consumers making more considered fashion choices once we’re at the other end of this. I hope that people will be more mindful about what they wear, and think about buying less, more thoughtfully designed and manufactured, unique and higher quality pieces.”

How Sue Stays Creative:

“Whilst quarantined I’m using my time (aside from home- schooling and excessive house cleaning) working on new embroideries and textile art-works. I’m very old school in the way I like to design and loving this opportunity to have the time to sketch more, especially from nature.”

More coming soon!
